"We are putting our officers where they need to be and that is a huge, huge step." We look at a lot of the shootings right now, they are not taking place in some of the deployment zones, which means we're nailing it," Weis said. "Just think, if we can get 60 70 percent accuracy. The city will also expand its predictive policing program, which uses statistical analysis to constantly re-deploy police where they are needed. They mayor pointed to cooperative efforts with the FBI and other agencies like Operation Return to Owner, which resulted in more than a hundred arrests and the seizure of dozens of guns. "Just see how many seizures of guns they've taken place, and this is not a sweep or anything. "They're doing a good job," Daley said Tuesday. Another 268 desk officers will be transferred back to street patrols. The city will accelerate the use of $9 million in stimulus funds to hire 100 additional police officers. Weis attributes the negative perception to the 24 hour news cycle, and stood with Mayor Richard Daley, Sheriff Tom Dart and Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez in announcing new initiatives to combat that perception. Still, while crime has decreased in each of the past 19 months, he admits more needs to be done. Jody Weis on Tuesday pointed out that there were 57 homicides in July of 2009, 16 more than this year. While Chicago police say statistics indicate crime is down, residents still say it's their biggest concern. It wasn’t the number of shows it was that they were all good shows, worthy of being kept around. With three police officers killed in the last two months and headlines detailing shooting after shooting, the city is fighting a public relations battle. Having four shows makes sense if they all deserve to exist, and that was the case for One Chicago. Losing Justice means that we also lose that extra piece of the big picture, and it’s also a negative in the sense that we no longer have an incredible show on the air. It also had the missing piece of the process, allowing the other shows to explore the legal system that up to that point had only been touched on mostly through Chicago PD. It was the best-written series on television and it showed the best of what TV could offer. Having four One Chicago shows was a positive because of the sheer quality of Chicago Justice. They felt they could “sacrifice,” again using Greenblatt’s words, a Chicago show and still be okay.īut will fans feel the same way? Maybe and maybe not. Something in there was more promising to them than the current state of the Chicago franchise, or they wouldn’t have made the changes that they did. They essentially gave up some consistency (as all four Chicago shows were steady in ratings this past season) to take risks elsewhere ( Taken, Trial & Error, Blindspot, Timeless, Shades of Blue and Law & Order: SVU were all lower-rated). They chose to take risks on several lower-rated series, most likely because those shows offered business advantages, and gambled on enough of them that Chicago Justice was squeezed out in what NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt called a “real estate issue.” To answer that question, we first have to realize that the bigger picture of NBC’s primetime schedule and what they want from it has definitely changed in the last few months. Should we be concerned? Or could the network have a valid point? They know what they want, but what’s best for the franchise and the fans? So the message is pretty clear: that NBC has found its limit when it comes to One Chicago, and it’s three shows. It’s not that NBC is avoiding franchises, as we also learned this week that the network is considering another Law & Order spinoff.Īnd it’s not that they’ve got too much from Dick Wolf he’ll have five shows on NBC next season.
